Last week, the Miami Dolphins inked quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a five-year, $212.5 million contract, making him the fourth highest-paid signal-passer in the NFL. Since joining forces with offensive genius Mike McDaniel in 2022, Tagovailoa has been among the best passers in the NFL, owning a sparking 102.9 rating during that span. On Wednesday, Miami added wide receiver help for Tagovailoa, signing free agent pass catcher Willie Snead. In a corresponding move, the Dolphins released defensive tackle Mario Kendricks.
Shortly after news of Snead’s signing, an old Miami Dolphins-related tweet about the team’s franchise quarterback surfaced. According to multiple Twitter accounts, including Sun Sentinel beat reporter David Furones, Snead took a shot at Tagovailoa late last season.
Miami Dolphins WR Willie Snead: Old Tweet Making Waves

Last season, while a member of the San Francisco 49ers, wideout Willie Snead voiced his opinion on the Miami Dolphins via the social media app Twitter. On his now-deleted account, Snead tweeted, “The Dolphins will be good when Tua (Tagovailoa) stop acting soft AF.”

Snead’s tweet came the night Miami lost to the Kansas City Chiefs 26-7 during Super Wild Card Weekend. Tagovailoa struggled in defeat, going 20-of-39 for 199 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a pick while being sacked twice. Tagovailoa’s shortcoming came immediately after posting a league-best 4,624 passing yards during the regular season. He also threw for a career-best 29 touchdowns. Tagovailoa has received criticism during his NFL career for less-than-stellar play in harsh conditions or against elite defenses. He faced both in last season’s playoffs when playing the Chiefs in Kansas City.
Snead: NFL Career

Willie Snead, an undrafted free agent in 2015, will enter his tenth NFL season. Despite his undrafted status, Snead posted an incredible 69 receptions, 984 yards, and three touchdowns as a rookie with the New Orleans Saints. The Ball State product continued to shine the following year, collecting a career-best 72 catches for 895 yards and four scores. After a down year with New Orleans in 2017, the pass-catcher landed with the Baltimore Ravens from 2018 to 2020. He collected 126 receptions, 1,422 yards, and nine touchdowns during that stretch.
Snead split time between the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 before joining the San Francisco 49ers, where he spent the last two seasons. Snead played sparingly with the NFC West club, eventually publically voicing his frustration with the team on the way out. Per his now-deactivated Twitter account, Snead wrote, “All I want is to go back to a team that isn’t afraid to let guys compete for a roster spot. These last 3 years have been nothing short of entitlement… Competition breedz Champion.”
Snead will join a wide receiver room headlined by Odell Beckham Jr., Jaylen Waddle, and Tyreek Hill. Snead will likely compete with Braxton Berrios, Malik Washington, and Kyric McGowan for a slot receiver role. Berrios and Washington offer the most competition, with the latter being a sixth-round draft selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
