The Miami Dolphins have been cutting players this offseason but they have added their first player via free agency. It is being reported by multiple sources that veteran tight end Jonnu Smith has agreed to a two-year, $10 million deal with the reigning AFC East champions.
Smith has bounced around a bit in his career and in his only season with the Atlanta Falcons, he had career-high outputs. He finished with 50 receptions on 70 targets for 582 yards and three touchdowns. Pairing him with players like Tua Tagovailoa and wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle makes this offense a bit better in 2024.
Adding Smith to a strong offense will be a major addition for the Miami Dolphins and for $5 million each season, it is potentially a bargain after seeing Dalton Schultz’s contract extension. This pairing is going to be interesting as the Miami Dolphins add another solid player to their ranks on the offensive side of the field.
What should the Miami Dolphins do next after signing Jonnu Smith?
The Miami Dolphins have a strong offensive team as they were viewed as one of the top offenses in the NFL a year ago. However, their defense has gotten a bit worse as they outright released cornerback Xavien Howard and deciding they are not applying the franchise tag on defensive tackle Christian Wilkins so they should go after that side of the ball.
With the secondary help that is now available after guys like safety Justin Simmons were released, expect the team to look towards the free agency market to fix some issues with a new defensive coordinator. The offense has been fine outside of finding out if Connor Williams will remain the team’s center or if they will need to find a new center.
