Just recently, the Miami Dolphins hosted the Atlanta Falcons in a preseason game, one in which a pair of rookies stood out. Along with quarterback Michael Penix Jr., running back Jaylen Wright earned big reviews after his performance on the field.
The Falcons’ preseason matchup against Miami provided a mix of positives, negatives, and concerning moments for the team. On the bright side, Penix showcased his arm talent and poise, delivering the ball accurately despite some minor accuracy issues.
The starting cornerback duo of Antonio Hamilton Sr. and Kevin King also impressed, with King recording an interception. Sixth-round pick Casey Washington had a strong showing, and second-year defensive lineman Zach Harrison disrupted a pass that led to a turnover.
However, the Falcons’ running game struggled, averaging just 2.7 yards per carry. The edge rushers, led by Arnold Ebeketie, failed to take advantage of the Dolphins’ offensive line. The team’s wide receiver depth was also a concern, as no one stepped up to solidify the WR3 role. Rookie defenders like JD Bertrand and Bralen Trice had underwhelming performances, raising questions about the team’s defensive depth.
The ugliest aspect of the game was the continued presence of veteran quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who was outplayed by a newcomer despite the team’s significant investment in him. Injuries also proved to be a significant problem, marring an otherwise mixed performance by the Falcons.
Miami Dolphins Rookie Jaylen Wright Earns Rave Reviews After First Preseason Game
On the Dolphins’ side of things, the team certainly like what they saw from Wright during their match against Atlanta. In an article written by Bleacher Report’s NFL staff, the rookie dropped an impressive performance for the preseason game of his career.
“While Atlanta is content with a talented rookie not playing, the Dolphins may be forced to find ways to get running back Jaylen Wright onto the field.
Wright is an explosive back who adds even more speed and dynamism to Miami’s top-ranked offense. The fourth-round draftee brings legit 4.38-second 40-yard-dash speed to an already potent backfield. Wright is a slashing runner, who can thrive in the zone-based scheme.
Wright carried the ball 10 times for 55 yards and score in his debut. Considering the injury histories of Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, the rookie can be a big contributor in Miami,” the article stated.
Wright played college football at Tennessee, where he had led the team in rushing yards and touchdowns as a sophomore and junior. He was selected by the Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft.
Even before the regular season has started, Miami fans have one more reason to anticipate how the team will perform. If Wright plays like this on a consistent basis, expect the Dolphins to surpass expectations down the line.
