This is the Memphis vs Tulane Preview. Tulane has lost at home before this year, that Tulane loss was to Southern Miss, a team winless to that point. Tulane is riding the crest of an overtime win over Houston and now, it’s first top 25 appearance in a decade. The Memphis Tigers are in the throes of a two-game losing streak, including a last-second loss to that same Houston team. Does this make them a favorite, yes, a seven-point one. Here’s why Coach Silverfield and the Memphis Tigers surprise this week.
Memphis vs. Tulane Preview
Upset Alert? At first glance, not the spot for an upset. Tulane is an offensive juggernaut, coming into this game with a top-25 ranking. The Memphis Tigers are coming off a devastating loss to Houston, and an upset loss on the road at ECU. The Kansas Jayhawks snapped their top-25 drought, with first appearance since 2009. They lost the next week. The Tulane Green Wave had not been ranked since 1998, are they due for a setback? Let’s look at the matchups and see if it’s possible; or even probable.
Memphis vs Tulane Preview
Tulane will face a reeling Memphis offense. The Green Wave defense is ranked 10th in the nation in yards allowed. The Memphis offense has lost 17-point plus leads the last two weeks…. the Tulane defense might not allow that. The Tulane defense only allowed one team to beat them; and that Southern Miss team depended upon rushing. Tulane was last ranked in 1998. Coincidentally in that year Tulane beat the Memphis Tigers and finished undefeated.
Memphis vs Tulane Preview
Memphis Tigers defensive preview; Defense getting well! At least that’s the main headline. Quindell Johnson is scheduled to be back this week (h/t to tweet from CA journalist Evan Barnes).
Some good news for the Tigers going to Tulane Saturday.
Ryan Silverfield said this morning on the radio that he was expects safety Quindell Johnson to play after Johnson was out last week vs ECU due to injury. https://t.co/1eqHDooTwj— Evan Barnes (@evan_b) October 20, 2022
Quindell Johnson was not there in the fourth quarter for the Houston defensive meltdown. The next week, with no Quindell Johnson, the defensive leader, was not there to steady the defense as ECU destroyed the Memphis Tigers defense late last week. Also, for the first time in several weeks, the Tigers did not grab a turnover.
Memphis vs Tulane
Memphis offensive preview; with the offensive line slowly healing and perhaps QB Seth Henigan will have adequate time in the pocket this week. The Tiger QB Seth Henigan threw two interceptions last week, perhaps a consequence of a wide-open playbook. That’s a holdover from the Houston game, and perhaps a symptom of the wide-open playbook. Coach Ryan Silverfield called a lot more passing plays and wide-open offense starting in the Houston game. Last week’s loss was the first in a while that Memphis lost the turnover battle. After Seth Henigan’s two-interception game… does the trend of open-playcalling continue?
Memphis vs Tulane
Prediction: Memphis in a stunner. I’m an observer, not a gambler, but Memphis Tigers’ fans know the team plays best with it’s back against the wall. And always, there’s one or two games the Tigers lose they are not supposed to. Conversely, there are one or two notable upsets Memphis makes each year. This should be the one; there’s no reason Memphis should be competitive. But given the return of their defensive leader, and the return of the gunslinging playcalling of these past two weeks – the Memphis Tigers should pull a stunner.
