On Friday afternoon, the Minnesota Vikings announced they placed J.J. McCarthy on season-ending injured reserve for his torn meniscus. They signed a former New England Patriots quarterback to their roster as they prepare for last weeks of training camp.
The Minnesota Vikings lost their rookie QB
McCarthy and the Vikings opted for season-ending surgery to repair his torn meniscus instead of trimming it. The decision is better for McCarthy’s long-term prospects. McCarthy’s surgery was successful, and he’ll be available to play in the 2025 regular season.
With McCarthy sidelined, Sam Darnold will assume the QB1 job. Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall were behind Darnold on the depth chart. They played some last season when Kirk Cousins suffered his Achilles injury, and not to great effect.
Matt Corral signed with the Vikings
Per a statement by the Vikings, the team signed Matt Corral. Corral was selected by the Panthers in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has no NFL stats and has not appeared in a league game. He was with the Patriots for part of the 2023 offseason.
Per the Vikings statement, Corral was recently a part of the UFL’s 2024 championship team:
Most recently, Corral played for the UFL’s 2024 Champion Birmingham Stallions, going 3-0 in his starts and completing 36 of 62 passes for 494 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Corral didn’t start in the championship game but helped the Stallions get there. He replaced a struggling Adrian Martinez when the team trailed in the UFC Conference Championship game, propelling them to victory.
