In the 2023 offseason, the Green Bay Packers chose to move on from several core veterans that made up the team when Aaron Rodgers was the starting quarterback. Wide receiver Mason Crosby, Allen Lazard, Marcedes Lewis, and Robert Tonyan left the Packers.
Green Bay chose not to re-sign Mason Crosby. Instead, the Packers drafted Anders Carlson in the sixth round of the 2023 draft.
Crosby found limited work with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants in 2023 before sitting out all of the 2024 campaign.
Mason Crosby is retiring
During an appearance on 105.7 The Fan on Tuesday, Crosby officially announced his retirement from the league.
“I think I’ve been putting this off for two years,” Crosby said. “I’ve been I’ve been putting it out of my mind. I think this stubbornness is what served me so well in my playing career. So today, I make my official announcement to retire from the NFL.
“The NFL said I was retired right at the end of this season because if you don’t play for a year, you technically just right off into the sunset. But you know what? I’m not riding off into the sunset. I always was so worried and fearful of retirement, of being done with something, being done with the end of a career.”
Crosby said he’s found things outside of football to be passionate about, which helped cement his choice to walk away from the NFL.

The Packers selected Crosby with the No. 193 pick in the 2007 draft. The former Colorado Buffaloes kicker won Super Bowl XLV with the Packers. He was the league’s scoring leader in 2007.
Crosby is the Green Bay Packers all-time leading scorer
At 40, Crosby finished his career making 400 of his 492 field goal attempts (81.3%). Crosby is the Packers’ all-time scoring leader with 1,918 points. The Georgetown, Texas native thanked the Packers and Aaron Rodgers for helping him to have a successful career.
“I started with Brett Farve, and I played with Aaron Rodgers the rest of my career. And I know we tease and we joke about Aaron, but he’s definitely a guy I have to give a ton of thanks to,” Crosby said. “He had my back in the good and the bad and the ugly–he always went to bat for me.
“He scored a lot of touchdowns allowing me to kick a lot of extra points and get all those records. So I can’t say enough about my good friend teammate Aaron Rodgers and what he meant to me and my family.”
