Mac Jones Coming Off A Tough Year
After an excellent rookie year, Mac Jones has gone through his fair share of struggles as quarterback of the New England Patriots, just 3 years removed since being selected 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The former 2 x National Champion at Alabama had down sophomore year in 2022 after a Pro Bowl rookie campaign, and many thought he was set to bounce back after former offensive play caller, Matt Patricia, was replaced in favor of a reunion with former Alabama (and Patriots) offensive coordinator, Bill O’Brien.
Unfortunately, this did not transpire; Jones’ play actually worsened, and he was eventually benched for backup and former 4th round pick, Bailey Zappe, for the last few games of the season.
Does Mac Jones Need A Fresh Start
Although both offensive coordinator, O’Brien, and legendary head couch, Bill Belichick, are no longer with the Patriots, the organization seems to have already seen enough from the young QB to allow him to explore a trade this offseason, despite receiving positive sentiments from current teammates.
And now, SB Nation’s Brian Pulpit has the Seattle Seahawks as strong potential fit to acquire the services of Jacksonville native. Pulpit’s reasoning goes as follows
“Geno Smith is set to return to Seattle this year, but the 34-year old has no guaranteed money remaining on his contract following the season.
Perhaps general manager John Schneider — who worked with Eliot Wolf in Green Bay — looks to add a younger backup in Jones this offseason. If Seattle is interested, however, they currently only have one pick per round on Day Three to negotiate with.”
Could Mac Jones Become A Seattle Seahawk In The Near Future?
The reasoning behind this is very sound: Current Seahawks backup, Drew Lock, who played well against the Philadelphia Eagles, is set to be a free agent this offseason. Bringing in Jones for the price of a 5th, 6th, 7th round pick would cost the team very little, and give them good insurance on account of a potential Geno Smith injury in the future.
Conversely, if Seattle believes that the difference between Geno Smith and Mac Jones is not all that different – remember, for those of you who will point to big statistical variances between the two, the vast gulf in scheme and skill player quality between the two sides – Seattle could bring in Jones and plan for him to be their bridge starter for next year for a potential incoming quarterback in the 2025 draft class.
As Pulpit mentioned, Smith has no guaranteed money left on his contract following this year (although it seems like post-restructure there could be a small dead cap, and after a disappointing year where the Seahawks failed to miss the playoffs, and looked generally mediocre – although not dreadful – Seattle may well feel that they Geno’s play, and the state of the team in general, does not truly warrant the large $30 million + /year contract he is owed, and makes plans to go ahead with a cheaper, younger option at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
