On Sunday, the Los Angeles Rams gave Darell Henderson six carries against the Seattle Seahawks. On Tuesday, per NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Rams released Henderson.
Henderson signed with the Rams in mid-October, making his season debut in Week 7 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Los Angeles opted to bring in Henderson after injuries to starting running back Kyren Williams and backup Ronnie Rivers left the group decimated. However, Henderson’s release comes with the expectation that Williams returns from the injured reserve (IR) this weekend.
Darrell Henderson: Second Stint with the Los Angeles Rams Ends Early
Darell Henderson, a third-round selection in the 2019 NFL draft, ran for 147 yards as a rookie playing behind Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown. He earned a larger share of the workload in 2020, rushing 138 times for 624 yards and five scores alongside Brown and fellow youngster Cam Akers. Henderson again operated as a role player in 2021, rushing 149 times for 688 yards and five scores, helping the Rams win the Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals. The Memphis product ran four times for seven yards during the postseason.
Henderson hit a wall last season, rushing for 4.0 yards per attempt before his release midway through the season. The five-foot-eight rusher had a cup of coffee with the Jacksonville Jaguars but never played in a game. The expectation was for Henderson to play with the Arlington Renegades next season, but the Rams re-signed the running back after injuries took their toll on them in the early going. He finished his second stint in LA with 112 yards and two scores on 2.4 yards per attempt. He also caught ten passes for 103 yards.
LA Rams: Running Back Depth Chart for Week 12
The expectation is starting running back Kyren Williams will rejoin the running back room sometime this week. He opened the season in a running back by committee with Cam Akers before the latter got traded to the Minnesota Vikings. Williams played well before his injury, rushing for 456 yards and six scores in six games. He also added 13 receptions for 105 yards and a touchdown. The most likely candidate to play behind Williams is Royce Freeman. The 27-year-old ran 17 times for 73 yards against the Seattle Seahawks last Sunday. The Rams also have Zach Evans on the roster, but he has just five carries this season.
