The Los Angeles Chargers overhauled the inside linebacker position in the offseason by releasing Eric Kendricks and not re-signing Kenneth Murray Jr., who signed with the Tennessee Titans.
The team knew they had to sign a starting-caliber player to replace Kendricks and Murray. They did just that by signing a familiar face.
The Los Angeles Chargers signed a familiar face in free agency
According to Aaron Wilson, Los Angeles signed Denzel Perryman to a 1-year, $3 million contract.
Denzel Perryman spent the first six years of his career with the Chargers
The San Diego Chargers drafted Perryman in the 2nd round, 48th overall of the 2015 NFL Draft. Perryman developed into a reliable starter playing in 69 games, starting 51, and had 349 tackles, 26 for a loss, eight QB hits, five sacks, three interceptions, six pass deflections, and three forced fumbles with the team.
Denzel Perryman bounced around with three teams in his last three seasons
Perryman signed a 2-year, $6 million contract with the Carolina Panthers in 2021, but the team traded him to the Las Vegas Raiders in August.
Perryman played in 27 games, starting 26 in his two seasons with Las Vegas, and had 237 tackles, 19 for a loss, eight QB hits, one sack, two interceptions, five pass deflections, and one forced fumble. He made it to his first Pro Bowl in 2021.
Perryman signed a 1-year, $2.6 million contract with the Houston Texans in 2023. Perryman played in 12 games, starting 11, and had 76 tackles, six for a loss, two QB hits, 0.5 sacks, and three pass deflections.
Who are the other ILB’s?
Los Angeles outside of Perryman has a young and inexperienced inside linebacker position. The players who are under contract include Daiyan Henley (will be his 2nd year), Nick Niemann (will be his 4th year), and Troy Dye (will be his 5th year).
These three players will compete for the second starting spot next season (unless they sign a veteran or draft one).
