The Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly releasing veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks ahead of this year’s free agency deadline. Kendricks, who signed with the Chargers in March of last year on a $13.25 million dollar contract for a 2-year period is now a free agent.
Cutting Kendricks will give Los Angeles extra $6.5 million in cap space heading into free agency and will be able to negotiate with players after the March 11th deadline. However, the Chargers are $25 million over the limit according to Spotrac’s salary cap tracker and will need to create more space in order to negotiate.

While Los Angeles did not live up to expectations in 2023 ending the regular season with a 5-12 record, Kendricks was able to post a productive season in the 15 games he played in. Totaling 117 tackles, 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble.
Kendricks, who has played nine seasons in the NFL since being drafted 45th overall in 2015 by the Minnesota Vikings will be 32 years old heading into free agency. The former All-Pro was ranked the 25th best linebacker by Pro Football Focus this season.
Kendricks Received All-Pro Status in 2019 with Minnesota Vikings
Before signing with Los Angeles in early 2023, Kenricks spent his first eight seasons in Minnesota. In 2019, he received his first Pro Bowl nomination and was selected to the Associated Press’ All-Pro First Team. He combined for 110 total tackles, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumbles recoveries in 15 games played that season.
Kendricks, who is now a free agent will be available for multiple teams who need a veteran at the linebacker position. Despite heading into his 10th season, Kendricks has proven that he can still produce in the NFL at a high level.
