The Los Angeles Chargers made a massive move this offseason that had absolutely nothing to do with their roster. Jim Harbaugh was hired to be their new head coach. It’s a move that could alter the trajectory of the franchise.

Harbaugh has been coveted by NFL teams over the last few years, but had been unwilling to leave the Michigan Wolverines. After winning a National Championship last season, he opted to return to the NFL.

Joining a team like the Chargers was too much for Harbaugh to pass up. He’ll be able to work with superstar quarterback Justin Herbert for years to come. That alone makes the fit interesting, as Harbaugh is known to be an excellent quarterback coach.

Now, he’s facing even bigger expectations ahead of his first season with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, oddsmakers are already expecting a big step in the right direction from the Chargers under Harbaugh. In fact, he has received insane odds to win the prestigious Coach of the Year award.

DraftKings currently has Harbaugh tied for first on the list of potential Coach of the Year candidates. The only coach that has as good of odds is Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus.

Not to take anything away from either Harbaugh or Eberflus, but those odds are extremely high. Neither coach has had one game under their belt and their teams did not make the playoffs last season.

While the entire NFL world is expecting to see Harbaugh immediately turn the Los Angeles Chargers around, it’s more likely that it will take a couple of years. He’ll need to completely change the culture that has been ruined over the last few years. That is not an easy task for any coach.

It’s reasonable to expect the Chargers to take a step in the right direction in 2024. However, it’s very unlikely that he will have them in position to win the Coach of the Year award.

All of that being said, the Los Angeles Chargers certainly could break onto the scene as a completely different team under Harbaugh. He does have that effect on players. Anything is possible, but we might be jumping the gun just a little bit on these kinds of expectations in 2024.
