Lane Johnson recently shared his insights about what happened to the Philadelphia Eagles toward the end of the 2023 season. During his interview with Dan Patrick, the Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle pointed to their Week 13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers as the turning point for the worse.
“I feel like as the film piles up, and really after the 49ers game, where it is kinda them dismantling us, I felt like teams kind of piggybacked off of that,” said Johnson.
“I don’t know if it was something we were doing, whether scheme-wise, maybe the teams were on to what we were running, but it was a lot more difficult than it needed to be,” he added (via Chase Senior on X).
After taking the NFL by storm with a 10-1 start, the Philadelphia Eagles went 1-6 to finish the regular season. They made it to the postseason because they had an 11-6 record, good for second in the NFC East, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers eventually knocked them out in the wild-card round.
What happened during the Philadelphia Eagles-San Francisco 49ers game that Lane Johnson pointed out?
After going 6-0 in the first quarter, the Philadelphia Eagles couldn’t do anything to stop the San Francisco 49ers from outscoring them 42-13 in the next three periods.
Brock Purdy threw for 314 yards and four touchdowns for the San Francisco 49ers, with Deebo Samuel scoring three of them. Meanwhile, Jalen Hurts threw for 298 yards with only one touchdown and had a brief scare when he headed back to the locker room due to concussion-like symptoms.
As for Lane Johnson, he was one of the brightest spots for the Philadelphia Eagles, as he was given a grade of 83.9 by the PFF in the defeat.
Britain Covey seems to agree with Lane Johnson’s honest take
Philadelphia Eagles punt returner Britain Covey also shared a similar take as Lane Johnson’s. In his talk with Chase Senior of Chat Sports, he said that the team got “emotionally tired” as the season wore on, which contributed to their struggles.
“There was some miscommunication from coaches to players, there were some pointing fingers from player to player, and there was letting outside voices impact our love for the game and the happiness we had. All of that combined to kind of make us spiral,” said Covey.
Up to this day, there’s still a lot of mystery surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles’ fall in 2023. But to their credit, they’re already starting to address their problems by making key moves internally, such as hiring Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio as their new offensive and defensive coordinators.
