The Philadelphia Eagles need a list of potential quarterback options for next season should they decide to trade Jalen Hurts. Kirk Cousins should be near the top of that list.
The Philadelphia Eagles could trade Jalen Hurts
As previously discussed on GH, Mike Florio with NBC Sports thinks the Eagles could trade Hurts this offseason after a winter filled with what appeared to be a “dysfunctional” locker room:
While there’s no specific reason to believe the Eagles or Hurts are ready for a fresh start, the general sense of dysfunction within the locker room seemed palpable toward the end of the season. It feels like something big happened, something we don’t know about. Something we might never know about. Whatever it was/is could be enough, in theory, to make the team or the player interested in making a change.
Unlike many high-end quarterback contracts, Hurts’ deal makes it fairly simple — if the Eagles want to do it (and if Hurts will waive his no-trade clause for it).
He has been paid $24.3 million so far. The cap hit for a pre-June 1 trade would be only $18.632 million for 2024. He’d then be off the books for 2025.
The Eagles need a QB plan
Many complications would preclude the Eagles from trading Hurts, even if both parties would want a fresh start. The Eagles have a veteran roster that wants a chance to win the Super Bowl in 2024. Head coach Nick Sirianni will return to the hot seat in September with expectations of finishing better in the postseason.
Trading Hurts would mean the Eagles would need to find a starting quarterback capable of leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl to replace a player who was the runner-up NFL MVP in 2022.
Trading Hurts to the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, or New England Patriots for the rights to draft a top rookie quarterback prospect in April would be a high-risk choice in a must-win season. That is, even if those three teams would be interested in making a trade.
Kirk Cousins should be on the Eagles’ radar
There isn’t much to shop for at quarterback in free agency except Cousins. The Minnesota Vikings are expected to try and re-sign Cousins, but they will be cash-strapped in an offseason they look to extend wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
The 35-year-old quarterback said recently that going to a team capable of winning football games would be his focus when choosing where to sign in free agency this offseason. The Miami Dolphins were suggested as a plausible option for Cousins.
However, the Eagles gig would be a better bet for Cousins. The NFC would be a much more manageable mountain to climb than the AFC due to the quarterback play separating the two conferences. The Eagles have a loaded offensive roster with wide receivers for Cousins to throw to.
Cousins is used to dealing with ball-hungry teammates like A.J. Brown. Jefferson appreciates it when Cousins looks his way.
If the Eagles can pull off a trade of Hurts, expect general manager Howie Roseman to make a hard push for Cousins to land in Philadelphia for 2024.
