The Kansas City Chiefs have waived John Ross from the retired list. Ross has been retired since July 26, 2023. He is setting his sights on a comeback to the NFL.
The former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver started his career with Cincinnati
The Cincinnati Bengals drafted John Ross in the 1st round, 9th overall, in the 2017 NFL Draft. He was the third wide receiver taken in the draft. He signed a 4-year, $17,115,863 rookie contract with a $10,587,900 signing bonus and $17,115,863 guaranteed.
Ross was named the sixth wide receiver on the depth chart to start the season. He missed Week 1 due to a knee injury and made his professional debut in Week 2. He fumbled on his only touch of the season on a 12-yard run. He was active for two out of the next ten games. He was placed on season-ending injured reserve on December 4 because of a shoulder injury.
He appeared in 13 games and made ten starts in his second season, recording 21 receptions for 210 yards and seven touchdowns. He missed three games with a groin strain.
He started in eight games during his third season, recording 28 receptions for 506 yards and three touchdowns. He missed eight games with a shoulder injury.
Cincinnati made their decision on his fifth-year option
Cincinnati declined his fifth-year option during the 2020 offseason. He appeared in three games and made one start in his last season with Cincinnati, recording two receptions for 17 yards. He actively wanted to be traded during the 2020 Trade Deadline, but no one traded for him. He was a healthy scratch for four games. Cincinnati placed him on injured reserve on November 14, with a foot injury sustained in practice.
Ross signed with a new team in 2021
The New York Giants signed John Ross to a 1-year, $2.25 million contract on March 19, 2021. He suffered a hamstring injury during practice on August 9. New York placed him on injured reserve to start the season. He was activated on October 2.
He saw playing time in Week 4 due to injuries to Darius Slayton and Sterling Shepard. He appeared in ten games and made one start, recording 11 receptions for 224 yards and one touchdown.
Did Ross play in 2022?
Ross sat out for the entirety of the 2022 season.
Kansas City signed him in 2023
Kansas City signed him to a reserve/future contract on January 9, 2023.
He informed the team that he would be retiring on July 26. The team later placed him on the reserve/retired list.
What now?
John Ross is hoping to sign with a team’s practice squad.
Ross is a very fast receiver who has dealt with numerous injuries in his career and hasn’t been utilized like he should be.
Hopefully, a contending team signs him to their practice squad and later elevates him to the active roster.
