The Kansas City Chiefs make it to Super Bowl LVII thanks to the heroics of superstar TE Travis Kelce. Fans of both the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers will identify him as the key man to making Patrick Mahomes effective under center.
Kelce’s performance in the AFC Championship is something to write home about as he led the team in receiving yards. What makes this performance all the more special is that it helps him break a postseason record against one of the NFL’s most iconic wideouts.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Kelce breaks Jerry Rice’s playoff catches record
Bryan Fonesca of the New York Post reported that the game saw Travis Kelce make 152 playoff receptions in his career. This allows him to overtake Jerry Rice’s 151 career postseason catches as the most in NFL history.
The legendary San Francisco 49ers wideout had a long career at the Bay, playing his first NFL game for the team back in 1985. It took 29 postseason games for him to make that tally, which makes Kelce’s new reception record all the more impressive.
With the way the Chiefs’ wide receiver room has been lackluster this season, fans can expect the number to balloon even further as the 34-year-old is Patrick Mahomes’ top-choice target.
Kelce dismisses any retirement talk
His career playoff receptions may become even more unreachable as Pro Bowler and boyfriend to international pop sensation Taylor Swift is having too much fun to call it quits.
The Daily Mail’s Isabel Baldwin detailed the future Hall of Famer’s thoughts on retirement days before the AFC Championship matchup:
‘It’s been a hell of a ride up to this point baby, I don’t feel like getting off the roller coaster anytime soon,’ he told reporters.
There is still buzz surrounding the league that he will likely ride off into the sunset alongside his older brother Jason, whose Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card.
It would be understandable for Travis Kelce to call it a day if the Chiefs win Super Bowl LVIII. However, his 984 receiving yards and five TDs show that he can still contribute to an elite KC offense. As long as he’s still up for it, fans can expect him to be back for the Chiefs’ training camp.
