There’s little doubt that Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks of this generation. The Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller has led his team to four Super Bowls in five years and is instrumental in building a dynasty in the AFC West.
His on-field achievements naturally veered the conversation towards him being the GOAT. However, the man in question has the GOAT debate far from his mind. He clarified that something else needed to happen before he even considered himself as one of the greatest to ever sling the football.
Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes: I don’t have seven Super Bowl rings yet
The media asked a myriad of questions to Mahomes during his turn at the podium during the Super Bowl Opening Night. One of the questions he addressed was whether he already considers himself as one of the best football players in history after leading a dynasty with the Chiefs.
However, Pro Football Talk’s Myles Simmons reported that winning the Super Bowl is the first thing on his mind. He also pointed out that Tom Brady, the GOAT for many football fans, has more rings than him:
“I mean, I’m not even close to halfway, so I haven’t put a lot of thought into it,” Mahomes said. “Your goal is to be the best player you can be. And I know I’m blessed to be with a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it’s doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring.
“And then if you ask me that question in like 15 years, I’ll see if I can get close to seven. But seven seems like a long ways away still.”
The six-time Pro Bowler has his priorities straight when it comes to putting himself in the GOAT conversation. In his mind, he won’t even consider himself to be on the same level as Brady as long as he hasn’t had as much Super Bowl wins as he did.
However, things should look up for the Texas Tech product. This season was his worst year since 2019, but he still notched an impressive 4183 passing yards, and 27 passing touchdowns. While he threw a career-high 14 interceptions, his 389 scrambling yards still poise him as a dangerous man under center.
The San Francisco Chiefs will have a hard time trying to contain him. If they cannot stop him, the GOAT debate will only get louder.
