The Kansas City Chiefs are on an historic run, having won three of the last five Super Bowls (and each of the last two). Should they win the Super Bowl again this season, they will become the first team in NFL history to win it three times in a row.
A major reason for the Chiefs’ run of success over the last several seasons has been their quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.
In eight NFL seasons, seven as the starting quarterback, Mahomes has been named to the Pro Bowl six times, won NFL MVP twice, was named the MVP of each of Kansas City’s three Super Bowl wins, and is a two-time First Team All-Pro.
On Sunday night, he can add to his legacy early in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Can Pass Dan Marino on Impressive List
According to Jordan Foote of Sports Illustrated, Mahomes needs just 14 passing yards to pass Dan Marino for the fourth-most passing yards through a quarterback’s first eight seasons in NFL history:
“With just 14 passing yards against the Chargers on Sunday, Mahomes would pass Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino for the fourth-most passing yards in a player’s first eight seasons. Considering Mahomes made just one start as a rookie and has several games left to go this year, being so high on the list is a massive achievement.”
As Foote notes, this is quite the accomplishment considering that Mahomes sat behind Alex Smith for the first year of his career.
In Mahomes’ seven years as a starter, he has thrown for 31,119 yards. Marino threw for 27,853 in his first seven seasons as the starter for the Miami Dolphins.
Marino played in 101 games in those first seven years. Mahomes has played 107 since being named the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.
Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Patrick Mahomes Is More Accurate Than He Has Ever Been
Foote also makes mention of the fact that Mahomes is currently the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards per game with 290.8. He points out, however, that his yards per game has gone down in each of the last two seasons. Mahomes threw for 308.8 yards per game in 2022, 261.4 in 2023, and 248.3 this year.
That being said, this should not be a reflection on him as a quarterback. Rather, it is a reflection of the quality of wide receivers that he has around him. More and more, Kansas City is forced to rely on the run game and shorter passes due to wide receiver injuries or departures.
However, it is worth noting that, this year, Mahomes’ 68.4% completion percentage is the highest of his career. While he may not be taking and hitting on as many deep passes, he is making up for it with more short-yardage throws that have kept Kansas City winning.
