The Kansas City Chiefs are the defending back-to-back Super Bowl Champions. As the prepare for their quest to become the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row (the Green Bay Packers won three consecutive championships on two occasions), their attention should be on that one singular goal.
Unfortunately, that has not been the case in recent weeks. Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker made himself into a household name by giving a controversial speech in which he questioned the role of women in modern society, claiming that the highest calling a woman can achieve is to be a wife and mother, or, as he put it, a “homemaker.”
These comments drew the ire of many public figures and continue to be debated online, on television, and on various podcasts. As controversial as they, however, head coach Andy Reid and his teammates (most notably Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce) have stuck by him, even if they do not agree with what he said.
Butker, however, was not the first Chiefs player to have his name in the headlines for actions off the field this offseason. Wide receiver Rashee Rice is facing some troubling legal issues that could result in a lengthy suspension by the NFL.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Was Involved in a High-Speed Accident
Over Easter weekend, a car that was registered to Rice was involved in a high-speed car accident on the North Central Highway in Texas. While it was not immediately clear if Rice was the one driving, it was later confirmed that he was. According to reports, the second-year wide receiver was driving 119 miles per hour.
To make matters worse, a video soon leaked of Rice and the people he was with fleeing the scene of the accident. While no one was killed, there were some people in other vehicles that were injured.
Rice turned himself in to police a few days later. He is now facing eight felony counts and a $1 million lawsuit by two of the victims.
Kansas City Chiefs Wide Receiver Rashee Rice Has One Trial Date Set
As mentioned, Rice is facing a lengthy suspension from the NFL due to his involvement in the accident. It will be interesting to see when and how long the possible suspension will be, especially considering the Chief’s Week 14 game takes place hours before his first reported court date.
According to KAKE, an ABC affiliate in Kansas City, Rice’s first court date for one of his civil suits is schedule for Monday, December 9. Rice and the Chiefs are schedule to play at home against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday Night Football on December 8.
As the accident occurred in Dallas, that is where the lawsuit was filed and where the trial will take place.
It is not yet known if Rice will be available for that Sunday Night Football matchup. He had requested for the lawsuits to be dropped, but a judge denied the request.
