The Kansas City Chiefs are 5-0 and on their Bye Week. Even though they have their sights set on making NFL history by winning the Super Bowl for the third year in a row, players are now using their only weekend off this season to get healthy and rest.
Tight end Travis Kelce is off in New York City with his popstar girlfriend, 14-time Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift. The couple was recently seen out on a double date with Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds and his wife, Blake Lively.
Harrison Butker, on the other hand, has remained in Missouri to campaign for republican senator Josh Hawley. During a recent rally, he was interviewed by Fox News and publicly endorsed Donald Trump for President of the United States due to his being more pro-life than Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the democratic nominee.
He also doubled down on some controversial comments he made about women during a commencement speech earlier this year.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Caused a Stir with His Comments about Women in Society
Earlier this year, Butker was invited to be the commencement speaker at Benedictine College, a traditional Catholic establishment. During his speech, which offended many groups of marginalized people, the Chiefs kicker said:
“For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you.
“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”
These comments were criticized by many people online, including Flavor Flav, Katy Perry, and Jason Kelce. Even the Sisters of Mount Scholastica, the order of nuns that founded Benedictine College, released a statement disagreeing with Butker’s message.
Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Tells Fox News It Is “Beautiful” When Women “Step Aside”
During his interview with Fox News while at the Josh Hawley rally, Butker was asked about his comments about women during his speech and the criticism he received as a result.
In response, he said: “I’m definitely saddened [some people] took it in a poor manner. I was talking to a specific crowd that I think was able to understand what I was trying to say.”
It should be noted that many women who graduated that day from Benedictine College took to social media to express their disagreement with Butker’s comments.
The Chiefs kicker continued, “But I was trying to speak life for so many women that have dedicated their life to being the homemaker, being the one that raises the children. And it’s a beautiful role, but it’s not a role that should be diminished.”
No role that any person, man, woman, or otherwise, should be diminished for that matter.
“There’s nothing shameful if you are a woman and you want to spend time with your family and raise your children, so it’s not putting down anyone who maybe wants to go get a great education and have a career.
“But it’s more talking about how beautiful it is for women to maybe just step aside and prioritize their family and spend time with their children and raise their family. And that’s what I was just trying to speak love about.”
Of course, this is an easy thing to say for a football player who recently signed a $25 million contract extension. Most families in the United States cannot afford to have one parent (because it does not have to be the woman) “step aside” and stay home.
