Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix isn’t just winning most of his teammates over on the field, he’s doing the same off it. After winning 34-18 over the Raiders, head coach Sean Payton keyed in on the similarity between Bo Nix and the Ferris Bueller character, who similarly has a lighthearted laid-back ease about him. It sparked a social media response that we all needed this week.
After a brief sideline exchange with Nix during the game, Payton’s comments followed. Payton described Nix as ‘quirky’ comparing him to the free-spirited high school student Bueller played by Matthew Broderick in the 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and suggested Nix may not be done yet with a bit of mischief in his game. Payton praised his quarterback’s unique approach: “There’s still a little bit of Ferris Bueller in him.”
He wholeheartedly embraced the comparison. One of the Instagram reels he posted on his day off combined clips from the game with scenes from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, set to the movie’s iconic theme song ‘Oh Yeah. The video quickly gained views from fans and teammates alike. Payton said he found it ‘outstanding’, especially appreciating Nix’s sense of humor.
Sean Payton called Bo Nix "Ferris Bueller."
Then Bo Nix did his homework & called Payton "Dennis the Menace."
"Yeah, I called him Ferris out here. And he called me Dennis because that was my nickname from [Bill] Parcells. So, Dennis the Menace & Ferris Bueller. There we go." pic.twitter.com/R8AHX8WLY2

Bo Nix’s Response Aren’t Done Yet
Bo Nix decided to answer Payton’s playful jab one step further. When Payton called him ‘Ferris’ in practice, Nix fired back by calling his coach ‘Dennis,’ ‘Dennis the Menace,’ which Payton got from his old mentor Bill Parcells when he was coaching,” Nix said. The humorous back-and-forth added a lighthearted dynamic to the team’s locker room.
He laughed about the comparison, adding he’s only seen the movie a few times but enjoys it. Nix said, “It’s just a great movie.” “I think it’s funny Coach Payton saw that connection.”
Playing the clown during his first season in the league, Nix’s middle name is growth, and he’s showing it on the field. Praise was heaped on his improved decision-making and his ability to avoid turnovers, making him the first Broncos rookie quarterback to win three straight starts. Denver has embarked on a recent winning streak, and it’s partly attributable to his confidence and consistency.
Nix’s reaction to the lighthearted Ferris Bueller is an easy indicator of not only who he is, but of the laid-back Broncos’ locker room, a relaxed team is a winning team and a winning team is a relaxed team.
