It’s a game for a trip to the Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. It is without a doubt the most important game of the season thus far for both teams. It will be the first-ever road AFC Championship game for the Chiefs during Patrick Mahomes era. It will also be the first-ever AFC Championship home game for the Ravens.
Just over 24 hours before their matchup, one Chiefs announced one addition to their team who has already won a Super Bowl.
The Kansas City Chiefs Add Super Bowl Champion To Their Roster Prior To Matchup With The Baltimore Ravens
Per multiple reports, the Chiefs have added a familiar face to their team:
For the AFC Championship Game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Kansas City Chiefs have elevated two players from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
Mike Pennel and Keith Taylor were elevated for Sunday’s game, the team announced on Saturday. As DT Derrick Nnadi was placed on injured reserve recently, Pennel was expected to be elevated.
For the divisional round playoff game against the Buffalo Bills, Pennel recorded two tackles and two stops in 40 defensive snaps. Having played in Super Bowl LIV and Super Bowl LV, he is a veteran with plenty of playoff experience for the Chiefs.
What Does This Mean For The Chiefs Defense?
Without Nnadi, Pennel played 52% of the defensive snaps against the Bills. Although fellow defensive tackle Matt Dickerson played an additional 16 snaps in Buffalo, he was not elevated on Saturday. As a result, the Chiefs will likely use three or four true defensive tackles on Sunday: Chris Jones, Tershawn Wharton, Pennel, and Neil Farrell, who has rarely been active.
The defensive line will certainly have their work cut out for them going against MVP favorite Lamar Jackson. It is no secret he loves to get out in space and make defenders miss if he doesn’t see anything open down field. The Chiefs’ defensive line will need to keep their head on a swivel if they want to contain Jackson and the Raven’s offense.
