Everyone knows Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes loves basketball. Just recently, he was often seen watching and supporting Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks during the 2024 NBA Playoffs. Some years ago, a video of Mahomes putting on a show on the court went viral.
Former Kansas City Chiefs defensive back tells a Patrick Mahomes basketball story
Former Chiefs cornerback Tyrann Mathieu recalled that time and said that it led to NFL contracts forbidding players from playing basketball.
“When I was in Kansas City, basketball was the thing that you couldn’t do,” New Orleans Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu said. “I think somebody took a video of [Mahomes] playing basketball, and that’s how that started, because then they didn’t want anybody playing basketball.”
Back in 2020, when Mahomes signed a titanic 10-year $450 million contract extension with the Chiefs, he revealed that his deal included a stipulation about avoiding some activities, including basketball.
“I still don’t think I’m allowed to play basketball,” Mahomes said in 2020 (h/t Bleacher Report’s Paul Kasabian). “I’m sure baseball is not going to be allowed as well. I know there’s a lot of them. They have like everything from jet skiing to, I don’t know what all the things are. I read a lot of them. It’s pretty much every physical activity you could do.”
To say that Mahomes is an integral member of the Chiefs would be a massive understatement. Without Mahomes, Kansas City wouldn’t be in contention for a Super Bowl three-peat in the upcoming 2024 NFL season. It’s only right for the Chiefs to be extra careful with their future Hall of Fame quarterback, even if it meant limiting the signal-caller’s chances to play basketball.
