After winning Super Bowl LVIII, the Kansas City Chiefs will now face the battle of managing their finances well before the next season starts. Unfortunately, letting Kadarius Toney go won’t help the front office in this matter.
There isn’t really that much to talk about Toney’s performance during his previous season in Kansas City. A year after making one of the biggest plays in Super Bowl LVII, the wide receiver has missed quite some time due to hip and ankle injuries, and the birth of his child.
Looking at the numbers, Toney hasn’t been that great on the field for the Chiefs. The wide receiver has 27 catches for 169 yards and just a lone touchdown last season. Plus, he dropped over 15 percent of his targets, making it the most for any qualifying receiver. He was also a source of tension in the locker room, making Toney’s fit with the team a questionable one.
Thanks to his poor performance, a lot of fans and critics have thought of letting Toney go to help the Chiefs retain other key players, like Chris Jones, in the lineup. Unfortunately, that move won’t be a big help to the franchise at all.
The Main Reason Why Releasing Kadarius Toney Won’t Improve Kansas City Chiefs’ Finances for Next Season
Even with Toney’s possible release, the Chiefs will still have the same struggles against the salary cap in 2024. Dan Graziano explains more in his article for ESPN:
“You might be yelling, “Kadarius Toney!” Why not cut the struggling receiver? Well, they might. His performance was that bad (five drops and just 169 total yards last season). But the Chiefs wouldn’t save any cash or cap space by cutting him. As a 2021 first-round pick, Toney’s entire four-year rookie contract was fully guaranteed. So the Chiefs have to pay him his $2.53 million salary for 2024 (and count it against the cap) even if they release him,” Graziano wrote.
As it stands, the Chiefs will have to make full use of Toney for the foreseeable future. In any case, there’s still hope the wide receiver can improve his performance on the court, or he can be packaged in a trade for a better player.
