Unlike most teams, the Kansas City Chiefs play their starters in their preseason opener. Since head coach Andy Reid took over in 2016, Kansas City has long opted to give their starters ample reps in the preseason in preparation for the grueling four-plus months of competition in the hyper-competitive NFL. Unfortunately, last week, the Chiefs suffered the consequences of playing their starters in a preseason exhibition tilt, with newly acquired wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown going down with an injury in the first play from scrimmage in their loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation, with Kansas City deeming the injury significant enough to send Brown on an overnight stay to a local hospital. On Tuesday, Kansas City gave an updated timeline on his injury.
Marquise Brown: Out 4-to-6 Weeks
On Tuesday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz announced Kansas City Chiefs wideout Marquise “Hollywood” Brown will miss upward of six weeks after suffering a sternoclavicular injury in the preseason opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Barring a miracle, Brown will miss the team’s regular-season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Night Football. Brown could also miss the Chiefs’ Week 2 tilt on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals.
#Chiefs WR Marquise “Hollywood” Brown is expected to miss four to six weeks with the sternoclavicular injury he suffered, per multiple sources. Opening night is three weeks from this Thursday night.

Following Brown’s injury, head coach Andy Reid compared it to a similar injury suffered by former elite Kansas City pass-catcher Tyreek Hill in 2019. Hill missed four games with a similar injury but returned to record five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns in his first game back from the IR.
Brown: Injured In Preseason Opener
On the first play of scrimmage in their preseason opener, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes bought time in the pocket before firing an eleven-yard strike to Marquise Brown. Following the catch, Jacksonville Jaguars defender Montaric Brown tackled the Kansas City pass-catcher, with the former’s weight landing forcefully on a distorted Hollywood Brown. The Chiefs wideout immediately left the contest, being ruled out for the remainder of the contest. Kanas City announced Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation, sending the former first-round pick to the hospital.
According to Stephania Bell of ESPN, “a (sternoclavicular) joint (where sternum or chest meets clavicle or collarbone) dislocation can be very dangerous (esp if displaces posteriorly, towards critical blood vessels). As a result, it has to be reduced (re-positioned properly) in the hospital with proper visualization.”
Hollywood Brown: Joins Kansas City Chiefs this Offseason
The Kansas City Chiefs added Marquise Brown on a one-year, $7 million deal this offseason. Brown spent the past two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before hitting free agency. The Oklahoma product tallied 118 receptions, 1,283 yards, and seven touchdowns across 26 games with the Cardinals. The 25th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Brown spent his first three seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before his two-year stint with Arizona.
Brown played well as a rookie, totaling 46 receptions, 584 yards, and seven touchdowns before posting a 769-yard, eight-touchdown campaign in 2020. However, his best season came in 2021, his final with Baltimore. Brown accumulated a career-best 91 receptions and 1,008 receiving yards in 16 games. He also caught six touchdowns. Brown caught 11-of-16 targets for 196 yards in two postseason games.
