Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro had his residence attacked recently, and Stephen A. Smith gave his honest take on the case, particularly towards the suspect in the arson.
In an episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show,” the ESPN analyst discussed the case of arson where Governor Josh Shapiro fell victim to.
“See ladies and gentlemen this is what I talk about when we’re talking about little old me as a sports commentator being a presidential candidate,” he said. “Think about the vitriol that exists on both sides of the aisle. I’m not going to accuse any politician of being at fault for this heinous act.”
“Mr. Balmer should be thrown under the jail. There were children in there. Two adults, a different family And what does he say to the police? ‘I would have beat him with a hammer if I could have.’ Clearly you want to inflict violence. Why, we don’t know.”
Stephen A. Smith has stirred up attention recently by hinting at a potential run for president in 2028. In interviews and social media posts, Smith expressed frustration with the current political landscape, stating that he feels compelled to “leave all doors open” for a possible candidacy.

While he emphasized his reluctance to become a politician, he acknowledged being approached by influential figures, including elected officials and billionaires, urging him to consider running.
Josh Shapiro’s Residence attacked by Arsonist
Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, became the target of a deliberate arson attack in the early hours of April 13, 2025. The fire, which broke out at approximately 2 a.m., forced Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children, and another family to evacuate the historic Georgian-style mansion.
Authorities quickly identified the suspect as Cody Balmer, a 38-year-old Harrisburg resident. Surveillance footage captured his actions, and he later admitted to harboring hatred toward Shapiro.

Balmer has been charged with attempted homicide, terrorism, aggravated arson, and other offenses. During his arraignment, he expressed no remorse and stated that he would have attacked Shapiro with a hammer had he encountered him inside the residence.

Shapiro condemned the violence, calling it a disturbing reflection of societal issues and emphasizing the need for unity and peace. The incident has sparked broader discussions about political violence and the safety of public officials. The investigation is ongoing, with federal authorities assisting in the case, and a reward has been offered for information leading to further arrests.
Governor Josh Shapiro expressed gratitude to the Pennsylvania State Police, firefighters, and law enforcement officials who responded swiftly to the attack.
