The Minnesota Vikings quarterback battle officially ended on Tuesday. Sam Darnold is set to be the Vikings Week 1 starter against the New York Giants after reports surfaced on Tuesday about rookie J.J. McCarthy’s injury.
J.J. McCarthy was sore after Saturday’s game
McCarthy missed practice on Monday for what Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell called “routine soreness”, just days after his first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders. As previously discussed on GH McCarthy had a solid outing against the Raiders:
As for McCarthy, he completed 11-of-17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. McCarthy threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to Trishton Jackson in the third quarter and also threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield.
The soreness didn’t appear to be routine on Tuesday.
The Minnesota Vikings reveal McCarthy’s injury
According to Adam Schefter with ESPN, O’Connell revealed McCarthy suffered a torn meniscus. McCarthy will undergo surgery to repair the injury. It’s unclear how long McCarthy will be sidelined due to the injury, but he will miss the beginning of the season.:
Vikings rookie first-round pick J.J. McCarthy is expected to be undergo knee surgery that will determine how much time he will be sidelined. McCarthy complained about knee soreness over the weekend, and underwent an MRI on Monday night.
McCarthy suffers a setback
The setback is unfortunate for McCarthy. The Vikings were slowly trying to ramp up McCarthy this offseason to let him grow into the eventual starting role in Minnesota. McCarthy needed to use training camp and preseason as a springboard to adjust to the NFL.
