With free agency starting on March 13th, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been making moves in order to free up cap space. The latest move Jacksonville has made is re-structuring offensive lineman Brandon Scherff’s contract, making it fully guaranteed for the 2024 season according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
After being selected 5th overall in 2015 by Washington, Scherff became a 5-time Pro Bowler and received an All-Pro nomination in 2021 before signing a 3-year deal worth $49.5 million with the Jaguars in 2022. The 32-year-old will be heading into his 9th season in 2024.
Jacksonville Jaguars to Save $5 million in Cap Space with Brandon Scherff Re-Structure
Scherff was originally going to count for $24 million towards Jacksonville’s salary cap for this off-season, but will now be cut down to around $19 million. Saving an extra $5 million in cap space bringing their total to just over $22 million according to Spotrac’s NFL salary cap tracker.
While the exact terms of his re-structured contract have not yet been revealed, his contract is expected to be fully guaranteed in 2024 and the Jaguars added three-voidable years to his contract. Pushing the salary cap hit to 2030 for their offensive lineman.
Jaguars will Have 4 Offensive Lineman Returning for 2024 Season
With Scherff’s contract set and the signing of Ezra Cleveland, Jacksonville will have 4 of their 5 lineman secured for next season outside of center. Where Luke Fortner is expected to be replaced after manning the middle for two seasons.
The Jaguars offensive front was underwhelming in 2023, allowing 16 sacks and 112 quarterback pressures between the 6 players with over 248 snaps and at times held back the offense of its full potential. Jacksonville will look to improve on last year’s mistakes with Scherff and their main core returning for next season.
