The Kansas City Chiefs are no longer waiting for the legal process to play itself out on a player they added to their roster during the 2023 season. Following an update on his legal issues in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the Chiefs are cutting a defensive lineman with 23 starts in the league.
Isaiah Buggs was arrested last Sunday
As previously discussed on GH, Isaiah Buggs was arrested last Sunday for the second time this offseason. He was accused of dragging the mother of his child down a flight of steps:
Lukas Weese with The Athletic provided an update on the case. Per court documents, Buggs allegedly dragged the mother of his child down the stairs of an apartment:
Buggs allegedly dragged a woman, who is the mother of his child, down the stairs of her apartment before getting arrested Sunday, according to Tuscaloosa (Ala.) district court documents filed Monday.
On June 16, Buggs allegedly entered the apartment of Yamya Johnson “unlawfully” and with the “intent to commit a crime,” according to the documents. According to police, Buggs broke into the apartment with a tire iron and dragged Johnson down the stairs, causing “scratch marks” on her wrists. Buggs then left the apartment, according to the court documents.
Buggs was arrested in May on a separate charge
Buggs was arrested and released in May in an alleged animal cruelty case. Buggs’ representation claimed the city of Tuscaloosa and the police department are attempting to force the former Alabama star to close his hookah lounge.
The Chiefs front office confirmed they were aware of both arrests last week. The Chiefs are currently in the dead period between OTAs and training camp. Veteran players will not report to training camp until July 20.
In multiple previous arrest situations involving Chiefs players, the front office has said they plan to let the legal process play out. However, it appears the Chiefs aren’t waiting for Buggs’ legal situation to play out completely before parting ways.
The Kansas City Chiefs are releasing Buggs
According to Tom Pelissero with the NFL Network, the Chiefs have informed Buggs they plan to release him. Buggs is in jail after his bond was revoked:
Isaiah Buggs’ bond was revoked after his most recent arrest and he’s currently in jail as multiple legal cases play out. Bigger issues to worry about than football, and Kansas City is moving on.
The Chiefs took a chance on Buggs last season following his release from the Detroit Lions. Buggs had a strange falling out with the Lions last season. He was a healthy scratch in multiple games after signing a two-year deal worth $6 million last March. Buggs posted cryptic messages on social media in early September.
