In 2017, Josh Allen had just finished his junior year at Wyoming and had mediocre numbers to say the least. He posted 1,812 passing yards, 16 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions. Less than ideal numbers when coming out of a draft class with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and Josh Rosen. Allen knew he had to prove himself and Charlie Campbell, football analyst, listed his strengths and weaknesses going into the draft.
Josh Allen’s Strength’s & Weaknesses
One of Allen’s greatest strengths was his size as a quarterback, sitting at 6ft 5in and weighing 238lbs. The average height for an NFL quarterback is 6ft 3in, which gave Allen the upper hand being able to see over his offensive line. Another notable advantage that separated him from other quarterbacks was his arm strength. Allen was throwing the ball over 70 yards in the air at Wyoming which caught the attention of many scouts.
The main weakness Josh Allen faced coming into the NFL draft was his accuracy. In Allen’s two starting seasons at Wyoming, he had a completion percentage of just over 55%. Another limitation/struggle revolved around interceptions. Allen had 21 interceptions in only 25 games at Wyoming. Therefore, some scouts were skeptical as to whether he would be a fit in the NFL as someone’s franchise quarterback.
How Allen Has Evolved in the NFL
The Bills took a chance in the 2018 NFL draft, moving up twice in the order to draft Allen. Many fans and analysts quickly wrote him off, certain that he was going to be a bust. He was determined to prove them wrong. In Allen’s rookie year, he had a record of 5-6, but this was a rebuilding year. The Bills had lost their two starting receivers and had a very young core to work with. After that first year, Allen started hearing those critics adopt a new perspective of him.
In three seasons as a starting quarterback, Allen has had a winning record each year, sitting at 34-15. In that same three-year span, Allen also has 14,427 passing yards, 93 touchdowns, and only 34 interceptions. Allen finished second in MVP votes in 2020 and in 2021 took the Bills all the way to the AFC Championship game. That loss to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship was a heartbreaker, but showed what Josh Allen is capable of. Allen is one of the best quarterbacks in the league and he is going to continue to put up monster numbers year in and year out. Because of these numbers, Josh Allen signed a 6-year $258 million contract showing the trust the Bills have in him. Needless to say, the Bills are in very safe hands and are going to be a force to reckon with for many years.
