The Houston Texans are in a uniquely strong position compared to the rest of the National Football League.
Coming off an AFC South division title and an underdog playoff win against the Joe Flacco – lead Cleveland Browns, the Texans still had over $70 million in cap space entering this free agency, with the only major free agent yet to be resigned being Jonathan Greenard, who ended up signing with the Minnesota Vikings.
The Houston Texans Feeling Pretty Happy With Their Position In The Rebuilding Cycle
So not only did the Texans have a successful year in 2023; winning the division title and a playoff game; but they established their quarterback as a bona fide top 10 signal caller in the league, and managed to make big splashes in free agency, trading for Pro Bowler, Joe Mixon, and signing important run stoppers in Folorunso Fatukasi and Azeez Al Shair.
Now, it seems like their one departure, Greenard, will end up being a swap of sorts, as the Texans have reached an agreement on a big deal for the ex – Vikings, former Second Team All-Pro defensive end, Danielle Hunter, per Tom Pelissero.

How Will This Impact The Houston Texans Defense
Whilst Greenard is certainly a strong complimentary rusher, and had his best year yet in 2023, recording 12.5 sacks – Hunter is a totally different animal.
Danielle Hunter has enjoyed an excellent 8 year career with the vikings, where he has amassed double digit sacks 5 times, including 4 times in the past 5 years.
He sneakily had a career year in 2023, quietly attaining 16.5 sacks, although his performance, along with those of other veterans like Khalil Mack and Josh Allen (the DE), was overshadowed by monster seasons from Defensive Player of the Year edge Candidates Maxx Crosby, Micah Parsons and eventual winner, Myles Garrett.
Despite being 29 years old, Hunter has shown that he can still perform with the very best in the NFL, and joins an excellent defensive line that contains Maliek Collins, Fatukasi and Defensive Rookie of the Year, Will Anderson Jr.
Let’s see what kind of terror Hunter and Anderson Jr. can inflict on the AFC South this year!
