Even though the new NFL season is has just begun, CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans are making their presence felt throughout the league. At the same time, running back Dameon Pierce is also taking the opportunity to make an impact for his team.
Pierce played college football at the University of Florida, where he became known for his powerful running style and versatility. He was then drafted by the Texans in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
In his rookie season, Pierce quickly established himself as a key player, earning the starting running back position. He made an impressive debut against the Indianapolis Colts, where he recorded 33 rushing yards. His breakout performance came in Week 3 against the Chicago Bears, where he scored his first touchdown and later rushed for 131 yards against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Pierce finished his inaugural season with notable stats, totaling 939 rushing yards and four touchdowns while contributing as a receiver with 30 catches for 165 yards and an additional touchdown. However, his sophomore season in 2023 presented challenges; he lost his starting role to Devin Singletary and struggled with consistency. Despite this, he showcased his skills with a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown against the Cleveland Browns.
ESPN Names Dameon Pierce as Houston Texans Most Important Backup
The Texans’ good start isn’t just about Stroud and his sophomore campaign. According to ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime, Pierce played a role as Houston’s best backup player in the roster.
“With running back Joe Mixon’s availability unknown because of an ankle injury, Pierce might be asked to step up and carry the rushing load. The Texans’ passing attack is averaging 219 yards through two weeks, and the offense is at its best when it can run the ball.
Houston scored 29 points with Mixon’s 159 rushing yards in Week 1, but it was limited to 19 points in Week 2 as he posted just 25 rushing yards. Pierce had 416 rushing yards and two touchdowns in 14 games as the backup last season,” Bien-Aime wrote.
Pierce is not projected to participate in practice due to a mild hamstring strain sustained just recently. He has been unable to practice since then, which raises concerns about his availability for the upcoming game against Minnesota. With Joe Mixon also sidelined, Pierce could see more opportunities if he recovers in time for Sunday’s matchup.
As of the start of the 2024 season, Pierce aims to regain his form and prove his worth in the Texans’ offense. With a blend of speed, strength, and the ability to catch passes, he remains a promising talent in the league, and fans are hopeful for his resurgence in the upcoming games.
