The Los Angeles Chargers might have received a gold strike with rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey. Recently, head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke in glowing praise of the young talent, saying, “He reminds me of Steve Smith. ” McConkey’s game style is similar to that of NFL legend Steve Smith. That at least speaks volumes about how much potential he has in the league and what he will bring to the Chargers‘ offense in his first season.

The Comparison to Steve Smith

Asked about McConkey, Harbaugh didn‘t hold back: “He reminds me of Steve Smith,” he said, which is high praise considering Smith‘s NFL reputation as one of the toughest, most dynamic receivers to ever put on cleats. Known for his grit-on-grit style of play, Smith was never the tallest receiver on the field but consistently used his speed, strength, and tenacity to outplay defenders. Similar attributes in McConkey–speed, quickness, and an aggressive style of play–make him a versatile weapon who can line up both outside and in the slot, much like Smith did throughout his career.
McConkey‘s Role in the Chargers Offense

McConkey joined the Chargers as a second-round draft pick after a career at Georgia, where he was frequently open due to his route-running ability, speed, and ability to make plays after the catch. With his 4.38 speed and yards after the catch ability, McConkey has already gotten a head start on developing chemistry with Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert- a promising omen as the Chargers look to bolster their passing game. Harbaugh has been quite open regarding how he feels McConkey will fit into the offense, which includes bringing in an “elite” aspect of making plays down the field similar to Smith.
How McConkey Compares to Other Rookie Receivers
Of all the hyped receivers in the 2024 draft class, McConkey had perhaps the most immediate versatility. His field-stretching capabilities, challenging defenders, and ability to line up in multiple positions make him a factor in the Chargers‘ offensive schemes. A rookie without the physical build of Steve Smith, Harbaugh‘s comparison speaks to McConkey’s ferocity on the field and his game-changing potential.

With Harbaugh‘s endorsement and a comparison to a HOF-caliber player, Ladd McConkey is certainly one of the more intriguing rookies entering this season. The speed, versatility, and aggressive style of the player infuses a new dynamic into the Chargers’ offense, and with development across from Herbert, McConkey may be a key piece to the future success of the Chargers. There’s every reason for fans to get excited about “the next Steve Smith“ being on their roster.
