To keep, or not to keep, that is the question for the Green Bay Packers Running Back room.
At this point, most of us are at least a little familiar with the wide receiver competition in Green Bay. Meanwhile, there has been another strong competition going on that may come down to a photo finish: The Green Bay Packers running backs.
The Running Back competition
While Aaron Jones and AJ Dillion are the unquestioned 1A and 1A starters, there has been speculation on if the Packers will roll the dice with two running backs on the final 53 man roster, or if they will keep a third. Over the course of camp, running backs Dexter Williams, Patrick Taylor, and Tyler Goodson all fought hard to make their case for the final 53.
With the preseason now having come and gone, the consensus on social media seems to be leaning towards a third. Currently, Tyler Goodson seems to be the likely candidate for that third spot if Green Bay decides to keep three.
Who is Tyler Goodson?
Putting up over 2,500 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns over three seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Goodson was picked up by the Packers as an Undrafted Free Agent, and quickly made his case for the potential third running back spot. While some folks have been pretty high on Goodson, he especially gained some attention in the Packers’ final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Early in the second quarter, Goodson took the handoff from Quarterback Jordan Love on a 3rd and 10 play from around the Chief’s 23 yard line and ran mostly untouched towards the end zone until he was met by Chief’s Safety Deon Bush around the seven yard line where Goodson hit him with a down right disgusting spin move, sending Bush crashing into teammate Joshua Williams and Goodson into the end zone.
Final Thoughts
While 3rd year Running Back Patrick Taylor also put up some solid stats this preseason, Goodson may have potentially sealed the deal on his highlight reel 3rd down run.
