Green Bay Packers In A Better Cap Situation Than Years Past
Since moving on from 4 x MVP and future Hall of Famer, Aaron Rodgers, last spring, the Green Bay Packers have been in surprisingly good cap shape.
They did not enter this offseason needing to make drastic cuts to their roster, and have only four starters; guard, Jon Runyan, safeties, Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford and return specialist, Keisean Nixon; heading into free agency come Monday.
Sitting at a respectable 23rd in the league in cap space, the Packers have just enough remaining to cover their rookie draft class budget, per Spotrac. And with oft-injured David Bakhtiari’s contract allowing a potential $21 million in cap savings, it seems more likely than not the Packers will either cut or save the former All-Pro left tackle.
Packers First Cap Saving Move Of The Offseason Comes On Defense
Despite an optimistic looking set of accounting books, Green Bay has nonetheless decided to part ways with former 1st team All – Pro inside linebacker, De’Vondre Campbell, per Tom Silverstein.

Why Are The Green Bay Packers Releasing De’Vondre Campbell?
Campbell had an excellent first year with the Packers, after being signed as free agent from the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. Since signing a 5 year, $50 million deal, the former 4th round pick has not quite hit the illustrious heights he set for himself amid a blistering start to his Green Bay career.
A major part of this concerns injury; Campbell has not played a full season since 2021, playing in 13 games in 2022 and just 11 this past season.
Although Green Bay Packers general manager, Brian Gutekunst, was happy to have Campbell return to the team when asked about it last month, it seems like financially, the Packers were not willing to keep the Fort Myers native at his current price point.
As the Packers transition to Jeff Hafley’s 4-3 defense, away from their long time 3-4 base, they will undoubtedly be somewhat thin at off-the-ball linebacker, where only former 1st round pick, Quay Walker and 5th round pick, Isaiah McDuffie remain as recognized starters.
Let’s see if Campbell returns to Green Bay, or if he finds some new team to call home this upcoming season.
