Earlier this week, it was reported that the Green Bay Packers had decided to pick up the fifth year option of defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt. This move was to be expected as Wyatt, when healthy, has played extremely well. His fifth-year option price, at $14 million, is also an extremely affordable price when it is compared to what others at his position are making around the league.
As many fans are aware, Wyatt was not Green Bay’s only first round pick in 2022. He also was not the first player they drafted in the first round that year.
The other, of course, was linebacker Quay Walker. When the Packers announced they had picked up Wyatt’s fifth-year option, many fans waited for them to also announce Walker’s.

Instead of announcing that they had picked up Walker’s option, though, the Packers did the opposite. They are actually declining the fourth-year linebacker’s option.
“The Packers are not picking up the fifth-year option on Quay Walker,” ESPN’s Rob Demovsky posted on X. “However, as GM Brian Gutekunst said earlier this offseason, they would like to sign him to a contract extension perhaps even before this season begins. Walker remains very much in their long-term plans.”
As Demovsky notes, Green Bay declined Walker’s option with the full intention of keeping him around after the 2025 season with a contract extension.
Had the Packers picked up Walker’s option, they would have been on the hook for $14.75 million in 2026. Obviously, they believe they can get an extension done that will cost them less per season than that.
Since being drafted by the Packers in 2022, Walker has played in 44 out of a possible 51 games and has started 43 of those contests. He has accumulated over 100 tackles in each of his first three seasons and, much to the dismay of many fans on social media, is going to be a key part of Green Bay’s defense for years to come.
