When the 2024 NFL season ended for the Green Bay Packers, it was apparent to everyone that they needed to address the wide receiver position in the offseason. Christian Watson will [likely] miss the start of the year after tearing his ACL in Week 18. The rest of the Packers’ top four wide receivers, Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks, were all among the league leaders in dropped passes and drop percentage.
Many expect Green Bay, therefore, to address the position in free agency or via trade. And while the Packers did sign three-time Super Bowl Champion Mecole Hardman, they otherwise were silent. That is, until the 2025 NFL Draft.
For the first time since 2002, Green Bay used their first round pick on a wide receiver, selecting Matthew Golden out of Texas with the 23rd overall pick. Then, in the third round, they took Savion Williams out of TCU.
The Green Bay Packers Have Decisions to Make at the Wide Receiver Position

Even with Watson [probably] sidelined for the beginning of the season, the Packers now have a plethora of wide receivers on their roster. As Hardman was signed and Golden and Williams were drafted, many forgot that Green Bay also re-signed Bo Melton earlier this year.
Currently, the Packers have the following wide receivers on their 90-man roster:
- Christian Watson
- Romeo Doubs
- Jayden Reed
- Dontayvion Wicks
- Matthew Golden
- Savion Williams
- Malik Heath
- Bo Melton
- Mecole Hardman
- Jadon Janke
- Julian Hicks
- Cornelius Johnson
At most, Green Bay will carry seven wide receivers, which is about the maximum amount of players at the position that they have carried under head coach Matt LaFleur. That being said, it is far more likely that they keep five or six, meaning that half or more than half of the current wide receivers will be cut.
The Green Bay Packers Signed Wide Receiver Sam Brown Jr. on Thursday

Surprisingly, the Packers were not done adding to the wide receiver room despite the high number of players they already have at the position. On Thursday, the team announced that they had signed undrafted free agent Sam Brown Jr., who played his 2024 college season at Miami (FL), but was also a teammate of Golden’s back at Houston.
Per the team’s website, “Brown (6-2, 200), an undrafted rookie free agent, played for West Virginia University (2020-21), the University of Houston (2022-23) and the University of Miami, Fla. (2024). He participated in the Miami Dolphins’ rookie camp earlier this month. Overall, Brown appeared in 43 collegiate games with 28 starts, recording 149 receptions for 1,903 yards (12.8 avg.) and nine touchdowns. In 2023, he earned All-Big 12 honorable mention after registering career highs in games started (11), receptions (62) and receiving yards (815). Brown will wear No. 17 for the Packers.”
Last season, Brown had 36 receptions for 509 yards and two touchdowns with the Hurricanes. His best collegiate season came in 2023, with Houston, when he had 62 receptions for 815 yards and three touchdowns.
Interestingly, he led the Cougars in both receptions and receiving yards that season while Golden was third in both categories.
