The Green Bay Packers fell to the Minnesota Vikings 31-29 on Sunday afternoon, dropping their record to 2-2 through four games of the 2024 NFL season. Jordan Love made his return to the field for the first time after spraining his MCL in the Packers’ Week One loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week One. He completed 32 of 54 passes for 389 yards, four touchdowns, three interceptions, and an 83.0 passer rating.
Love and the rest of the Packers struggled mightily in the first half. The offense committed multiple turnovers while the defense could not find a way to keep the Vikings out of the end zone. Second-year wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks, in particular, had a rough start to his day, dropping multiple passes that killed drives and cost the team points.
During and after the game, many fans called for the Packers to stop playing Wicks or to just release him. That, however, would be a mistake.
Green Bay Packers Wide Receiver Dontayvion Wicks Has Great Potential
PFF credited Wicks with two drops in Green Bay’s loss to Minnesota. However, he also had five receptions for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
On the season, Wicks has eight receptions for 104 yards and three touchdowns. While these numbers may not seem like much on the surface, it is worth noting that Wicks only trails Justin Jefferson and Marvin Harrison Jr. in touchdown receptions.
In other words, he is a playmaker. His ability to run precise routes and lose defenders in coverage has earned him comparisons to former Packers wide receiver Davante Adams.
Interestingly, Adams also struggled with drops during his second season, leading many fans to want him cut from the team. It is a good thing the team did not listen to the fans as Adams went on to have some of the best single seasons by a wide receiver in franchise history and became a perennial Pro Bowler.
This is not to say that Wicks is definitely going to become the next Adams. He has a long way to go in that matter. But three touchdown receptions in four games is significant. With Christian Watson likely out for a few weeks with a sprained ankle, his role on the offense is going to increase instead of decrease.
Hopefully he can limit the drops because he has the potential to be a special receiver in the NFL.
