The Green Bay Packers’ postseason hopes were dealt a brutal blow on Sunday following their deflating 34-20 defeat at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Packers have Baker Mayfield to thank for that as the Bucs quarterback turned in a performance for the ages — one that saw the 28-year-old set a never-before-seen record in Lambeau Field.
Baker Mayfield Destroyed Green Bay Packers
After going 22-of-28 on his passes for 381 yards, while also logging four touchdowns and zero turnovers, Mayfield became the only opposing quarterback to score a perfect passer rating in Lambeau Field. The only other player to have ever achieved a similar feat in Lambeau was Aaron Rodgers, which clearly speaks volumes of Mayfield’s incredible feat.
The Buccaneers quarterback was so good that even Packers head coach Mike LaFleur could not help but heap praise on the former Rookie of the Year:
“Baker went out and shredded us,” LaFleur said, via Mike Spofford of the team website. “It’s disappointing, obviously, because we sacked him five times and ultimately that still wasn’t enough.”
As LaFleur said, the Packers did all they could to stop Mayfield, which proved nothing close to enough.
LaFleur Remains Optimistic
This loss has dropped Green Bay to 6-8, but they are still just one game outside the last two NFC wild-card spots. However, five other teams are also contending for those two remaining spots, which means that the Packers will have their work cut out for them.
Be that as it may, LaFleur remains optimistic about his team’s chances:
“All I know is this: We’ve got three weeks left. We’ve got three games and every game is a playoff mentality,” LaFleur said. “Who knows what will happen? But we can’t get it all back at once, you’ve got to earn it every day. You’ve got to get back to practice and just give it our best shot from here on out.”
It all starts with a Week 16 matchup against the Carolina Panthers on Christmas Eve. It goes without saying that that’s going to be a must-win game for the Packers.
