The Buffalo Bills are expected to have one of their best wide receivers test free agency this offseason after a silent season from the front office. The Bills’ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at home in the Divisional Round Sunday showed the team needs a little more juice for quarterback Josh Allen to beat the AFC’s best.
There’s one red flag that will stop the Bills from being able to add firepower this offseason–their budget.
The Buffalo Bills head into the offseason in the red
The Bills will head into an offseason where they will need to find a way to balance their books. According to Over The Cap, the Bills are over $43 million in the red before the start of the new league in March. The Bills’ cap space could keep them from being able to re-sign their second-leading wide receiver from the 2023 season.
Gabe Davis wants his money
According to Alaina Getzenberg with ESPN, wide receiver Gabe Davis said he intends to test the open market in March after a season in which the Bills offered him “nothing” to sign a new deal in Buffalo. Davis said he’d be interested in staying with the Bills.
Bills wide receiver Gabe Davis said that he anticipates going to free agency in March. He said he’d be open to coming back to Buffalo, but also noted how the whole season went “and there was nothing” in terms of an extension

The Bills 2020 fourth-round pick said the Bills know he plans to become a free agent.
“I mean, I think they know. Yeah, we’ve talked before,” Davis said.

Can the Bills afford Davis? The draft is cheaper…
The Bills’ cap situation is likely the primary driver keeping the team from extending Davis. They can’t overspend on homegrown talent when they’re so deep in the red. Allen could lose another reliable target for next season.
The Bills have nine draft picks in the 2024 NFL Draft. That’s where they could find cheaper help for their receiving corps next season.
Davis has earned more money for the 2024 season than what a rookie will offer. He’s going to take that better contract in Buffalo or elsewhere.
