College Football is moving to a new playoff format starting this year, but it will continue to utilize NFL stadiums for the National Championship Game. Although this was a forgone conclusion, with the original playoff contract ending at the end of the 2025-26 year, there were some questions about what it would look like starting in 2027.
We now have the answer.
College Football Playoff Format Will Be Different

- Seeds 1-4 will get a first-round bye.
- Seeds 5-8 will host seeds 9-12 in a home game for the first round (5 vs 12, 6 vs 11 etc…)
- The quarterfinals and semifinals will be hosted by the traditional New Year Six Bowl Games, which include the Cotton Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Orange Bowl.
- The National Championship will take place in a new place every year.
The quarterfinal and semi-final games will rotate between which one is in each round. None of the bowl games will have conference affiliations like they did in the past. Realistically, Oregon could be playing Washington in the Sugar Bowl in Atlanta, Georgia.

Las Vegas will host the 2027 National Championship Game. This will be the first time that the game will be played in Las Vegas, and it will be a very popular destination due to its ease of travel from most parts of the country and the affordability it offers with hotels and tourism (unless you get stuck in a casino).
It was also announced that New Orleans will host in 2028, Dallas in 2029, and Miami in 2030. If those locations don’t work out a deal, the backup locations are Houston, Phoenix, and Tampa.
Again, all would be played in NFL stadiums.
