Johnny Manziel was one of the many quarterbacks the Cleveland Browns had during their extended stretch of mediocrity. He was a highly touted signal-caller out of college who had one of the most legendary collegiate careers in recent history.
However, his NFL career burned out as he succumbed to the pressures of being an elite NFL quarterback. Now years removed from NFL football, he took the opportunity to talk about the chances he missed during the time he was with the team.
Johnny Manziel regrets not stepping up during Cleveland Browns stint
Manziel was the guest in the most recent Club Shay Shay episode, and he bared everything that went wrong during his two-year stint with the Cleveland Browns.
BroBible’s Jacob Elsey wrote about Manziel’s most painful realizations, which included failing to realize that he had a shot to build his legacy with the team:
“Because of me signing with LeBron… I had the opportunity to be great in my own right. They gave me the best fighting chance and built a team around me. The thing I realize now is, the reason why they’re still p—ed at me to this day, is they don’t lose.
“They don’t bet on anything that’s not a sure thing. What I did, and the way I carried myself, and the way that I was during my time in Cleveland was pure and blatant disrespect to them giving me everything that I could’ve ever needed to be successful.”
He also talked about Joe Thomas, the Hall of Fame lineman who was his teammate in 2013 and 2014:
“He was at the end of his Hall of Fame career, looking for someone to come in and lead this team, and then you get me… it’s embarrassing to be the guy that let down some great athletes.”
Johnny Manziel didn’t manage to play a full season’s worth of games in his short NFL career. He only managed to get 1675 passing yards, 7 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions before hitting a downward spiral that saw him cast out of the league.
While many Browns fans still hate his guts, it’s still good to see Johnny Football in a better place mentally.
