From 2018 to 2020, the Florida football team posted a 29-9 record. Since 2021, the Florida Gators are 18-22. The main difference? Florida transitioning from head coach Dan Mullen to former Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns bench boss Billy Napier. The two-time Sun Belt Coach of the Year, Napier has floundered during his tenure in Gainsville, and on Saturday, the team suffered another tough home loss, this time to the Texas A&M Aggies.
The Gators fell to the Aggies 33-20, but the final score does not tell the whole story. Florida football trailed 20-0 at the half, while A&M played without starting quarterback Conner Weigman. Texas A&M did not miss a beat, rushing for 310 yards in the Florida loss. The Gators faithful didn’t hold back, putting Napier and the team on blast for the brutal showing at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.
Florida Football Fans Angry After Home Defeat
According to Texas A&M Aggies Lead Recruiting AnalystJaxson Callaway:Texas A&M absolutely destroyed Florida on the road today and saw a lot of flashes from redshirt freshman Marcel Reed. They kick-off conference play 1-0 and have an interesting decision to make at quarterback ahead of Bowling Green next weekend.
The Florida football team had no answer for the Texas A&M offense, specifically the rushing attack. A&M ran wild, totaling 310 rushing yards. Two separate running backs averaged over five yards per carry, while dual-threat quarterback Marcel Reed took 13 rush attempts for 83 yards and one touchdown. Meanwhile, Florida operated with a two-quarterback system, with Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway throwing an interception. Lagway struggled as a passer and rusher, completing less than 50% of his passes and rushing for -20 yards.
Florida football’s loss drops them to 1-2 on the season, with their lone win coming at home against the lowly Samford Bulldogs. Florida has yet to beat an FBS opponent. With Billy Napier eyeing another season under .500, fans are at wit’s end with the 45-year-old. Many of their most vocal fans took aim at Napier, calling for his job shortly after the final whistle blew in Saturday’s loss.
