On Saturday, the Florida football team will try to get over .500 for the first time this season when they host the Texas A&M Aggies at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Florida won last week against a lowly Samford Bulldogs squad following a blowout home loss against the Miami Hurricanes in their season opener. Florida Gators quarterback Graham Mertz missed the team’s win over Samford while recovering from a concussion sustained against Miami. Still, head coach Billy Napier announced he would be available in this weekend’s SEC clash.
After revealing that freshman phenom DJ Lagway and Mertz would play on Saturday, Napier proclaimed his starter on Friday. The veteran Mertz will get the starting nod, with Lagway still likely to make an impact at some point against Texas A&M.
Florida Football to Give Start to QB Graham Mertz
According to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports:
Graham Mertz is set to start at QB for Florida vs. Texas A&M tomorrow, sources tell @247Sports/@CBSSports. Five-star freshman QB DJ Lagway, who threw for 456 yards and three TDs last week vs. Samford while starting in place of an injured Mertz, is expected to see time as well.
Head coach Billy Napier will start sixth-year senior Graham Mertz after he missed last week with a concussion. The Wisconsin Badgers transfer is 11-for-20 for 91 yards and an interception this season. Last year, his first with Folirda football, he tossed 20 touchdowns to three picks. Mertz remains a passer only who has stellar efficiency but has struggled in big games.
Meanwhile, DJ Lagway will return to the bench following his first start against the Samford Bulldogs. Lagway shined in the start, albeit against non-FBS competition. The five-star mega prospect and dual-threat passer went 18-of-25 for 456 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran five times for 16 yards. Like Mertz, he floundered in the season opener against the Miami Hurricanes, completing just 50% of his passes with no scores and an interception.
