College football is set to kickoff in less than two months. While many fans don’t want to miss any action, unfortunately time is finite. This article will highlight the games that every diehard college football fan cannot miss.
College Football Week 2: Alabama at Texas
While Alabama will be coming into the year with the top QB in Bryce Young and the top defensive player in Will Anderson Jr, Texas still has many questions that remain unanswered. First, who will start at QB? Will it be Hudson Card, who looked unremarkable in his P5 play last year, or will it be highly touted QB Quinn Ewers? Second, will the offensive line improve from last year’s terrible performance? They will certainly be tested by Alabama’s two elite linebackers in Dallas Turner and Will Anderson Jr.
If Steve Sarkisian is able to improve the offense from last season, then Texas fans can have a sigh of relief. t At least things seem to be improving, even if it’s not at the level they want. But if the offense doesn’t perform well in this game, Sarkisian’s firing may be in the not-too-distant future.
College Football Week 2: USC vs Stanford
This will be Lincoln Riley’s first Power Five game as head coach of the USC Trojans, as he takes on a Stanford team that has struggled in recent years. While many may write off this game as a blowout in the Trojans favor, Stanford possesses an elite talent at QB that could go toe-to-toe with Caleb Williams. Junior QB Tanner McKee has decided to return to the farm in 2022. At the beginning of last season, he exhibited elite accuracy and big play ability. This game could be an entertaining shootout if the ball bounces the right way for the Cardinal.
Week 5: Alabama vs Arkansas
This game might feature the two best quarterbacks in the SEC in Alabama’s Bryce Young and Arkansas’ KJ Jefferson. In last year’s game both quarterbacks displayed their dazzling accuracy downfield in a high scoring shootout where Alabama won 42-35. However, with the game being in Fayetteville this year, Arkansas has a much better chance of pulling it out. The Hogs also upgraded their secondary as CBs Dwight McGlothern and Latavious Brini transferred to Arkansas during the offseason. If the Razorbacks can improve their defense, while retaining a high scoring offense, Alabama could be in trouble.
Week 1: Ohio State vs Notre Dame
Junior QB CJ Stroud and junior wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba may combine to make one the greatest QB-WR duos in the history of the sport. In a crowded and talented wide receiver room last season, Smith-Njigba had 95 receptions for 1,606 yards and nine touchdowns. As the clear-cut No.1 option this season, look for Smith-Njigba to break college football records for receiving.
On the other side, Notre Dame looks to get off to a great start under first-year head coach Marcus Freeman. Freeman, who is an elite defensive mind, will have to come up with a way to out-scheme this potent Ohio State offense. While the Fighting Irish are still trying to figure out their QB situation. The defense should be solid with playmakers like defensive end Isaiah Foskey and all-American safety Brandon Joseph.
The schematic matchup of Ryan Day against Marcus Freeman and Al Golden should determine the winner of this game.
Week 7: USC vs Utah`
This game may determine the winner of the Pac-12 this season. USC and Utah, on paper, look like the two definitive front-runners in the conference. For Utah, QB Cam Rising and star RB Tavion Thomas return, along with three starting offensive lineman. Tight End Brant Kuithe is also coming back after an all Pac-12 season.
Under Lincoln Riley, USC has added a host of talent, including QB Caleb Williams, 2021 Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison, and running back Travis Dye from Oregon.
If Utah’s offense starts where it left off during the Rose Bowl, and the talent begins to develop chemistry for USC, this could be a high-scoring, entertaining matchup.
If USC is able to pull out this game in Salt Lake City, they may coast to a Pac-12 championship in Riley’s first year, which will accelerate momentum for the program going forward.
