Back in April, 4-star QB Malachi Singleton spurned his home state UGA Bulldogs and committed to Arkansas. Singleton also possessed offers from Miami (FL), West Virginia, Cincinnati, and UCF.
The QB from North Cobb, Georgia is a very intriguing prospect. He has the ability to push the ball downfield and also take off and run. This article will evaluate Singleton and project his game at the next level.
Malachi Singleton Evaluation
To start, Singleton stands at 6’1 225 pounds. Many fans may worry about Singleton’s thicker build, but this shouldn’t be a concern as we’ll see.
During his high school career, Singleton has been adept at making explosive plays with his legs. Even at 225 pounds, Singleton possesses great foot speed. Because of this attribute, Singleton can afford to keep his current weight or gain even more. If Arkansas OC Kendal Briles decides to run Singleton a lot, then Singleton will likely not slim down. Losing weight could mean that he’ll be more prone to injury, especially when going up against SEC-level defenders. Singleton is also far from flat-footed, as he has great short-area agility to make defenders miss.
In addition to his running ability, Singleton also has a great pocket awareness. His high school film shows that he’s able to get the ball out quickly in the face of pressure. It also appears that Singleton has already developed a calibrated internal clock. This will certainly be important against the SEC defensive lines he will face week-in and week-out.
Most importantly, Singleton has shown the willingness to throw the ball vertically against defenses. Kendal Briles’ offense requires QBs to take shots downfield so that fewer defenders crowd the box. This opens the running game. On his deep passes, Singleton displays great touch and ball placement. He’s able to hit receivers on the run and also throw into areas where his receivers have leverage.
However, there are still areas in which Singleton can get better. His ability to throw on the run still needs marked improvement. Additionally, Singleton still has room to raise his accuracy on short and intermediate throws. But the good news is that Singleton has a lot of time to improve these qualities, as he’s just entering his senior year of high school. He likely won’t be asked to start immediately for Arkansas, which will give him more time to adapt to throwing more complex routes.
Overall, Singleton possesses a lot of qualities that current Hogs QB KJ Jefferson has. Jefferson has experienced a ton of success so far under Kendal Briles, and there’s no reason Singleton can’t do the same.
