The first night of the 2025 NFL Draft saw many surprises. The Jacksonville Jaguars, for example, traded up to the second pick overall in order to select Colorado Buffaloes star and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. The Green Bay Packers, who are hosting the draft, selected Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick, marking the first time in 23 years that the team took a wide receiver in the first round.
One of the biggest surprises, though, was that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, at one time considered a top-five pick, did not get selected at all.
Why Didn’t Shedeur Sanders Get Taken in the First Round of the 2025 NFL Draft?

In general, the quarterback class in this year’s draft is not considered to be very good. While Cam Ward was the first overall pick by the Tennessee Titans and Jaxson Dart was taken by the New York Giants (who traded up to get him), Sanders saw the first round come and go without hearing his name called.
But why?
Over the course of the past week, there have been some not-so-flattering reports about the former Buffaloes star. Some NFL executives, apparently, were turned off by his demeanor during his visits. Additionally, many fans speculate that teams do not want to deal with his Hall of Fame father, Deion Sanders.
Whatever the reason for his slide, the President of the United States cannot make sense of it himself.
President Donald Trump Chides the NFL for Shedeur Sanders Sliding Out of the First Round

In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Donald Trump wrote:
“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He’s also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. He should be ‘picked’ IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!”
It will be interesting to see which team will select Sanders on Day Two, if they plan on taking him at all. The Pittsburgh Steelers were believed to have been interested in him at pick 21, but drafted Derrick Harmon instead.
Harmon’s mother passed away in the hospital right after he arrived and told her that he had been drafted.
While the Steelers may still select Sanders, Harmon’s story is going to be one that this particular draft will be remembered for.
