The Detroit Lions roster moves
The Detroit Lions’ first preseason game in East Rutherford brought both flickers of promise and injuries, most notably second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker went down on his second series with a concussion.
The Lions made two roster moves today. The Detroit Lions’ Twitter says the team announced roster moves, waving injured wide receiver Antoine Green, released offensive lineman Ike Boettger, and signed quarterback Jake Fromm and linebacker Ty Summers.
Although Hooker’s NFL debut was limited to two series, the Lions were high on Hooker’s promising performance. The Lions can’t yet expect Hooker to return until he first clears medical protocol.
Concussion protocol is a slow process, and there is no timeline for a player to return when they go down with a brain injury. Although Hooker’s NFL debut was limited to two series, the Lions were high on Hooker’s promising performance. Head coach Dan Campbell said there is a possibility the Lions will bring in another quarterback to fill out the roster until Hooker returns.
Detroit Lions add a QB
QB2 prospect Hendon Hooker may be unlikely to be cleared for upcoming Saturday’s matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Lions may need to look externally at adding depth
Nate Sudfeld and Hooker are currently battling for the backup job behind Jared Goff, so this opportunity could be appealing for a free agent looking to compete for a roster spot.
Hendon Hooker
Henden Hooker played like it was the Super Bowl He was delivering a blow which is great but as Dan Campbell said after the game he said that this is great but he does need to learn how to slide.
Lions fans haven’t seen a quarterback bringing this type of dimension and skillset with ability to run, and he gives fans a lot of reason to be excited.
Jake Fromm
Fromm may likely have been brought in because Hooker has not yet cleared medical protocol. He was drafted in 2020 by the Buffalo Bills, a fifth-round pick, number 67 overall.
According to ESPN, he played three games in 2021 not taken a snap in a regular-season game in three seasons. In those three games, he had a touchdown and three interceptions.
Ty Summers
As linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez missed Sunday’s practice in addition to the second joint practice and preseason opener, Summers is a new addition to the linebacker room and provides needed depth.
The TCU product, Summers was the 2019 seventh-round pick of the Green Bay Packers and has appeared in 67 career games over several teams. He had two tackles in the preseason opener for the Jaguars, playing 12 snaps on defense and seven on special teams.
Lions hometown hero
Donovan Peoples-Jones signed a one-year deal in the offseason. Many enthusiasts thought he’d be the third receiver but Peoples-Jones is playing deep into the third quarter with just one catch in the preseason so far.
Peoples-Jones is one of those guys who really has to step it up. He hasn’t had the greatest camp and he has to really continue to put in work. He has to have a good game in these next two games to showcase how he can add value and make this Lions roster.
What time is the Lions game?
The two-time defending Super Bowl champions will welcome Detroit to Arrowhead this Sunday, Aug. 17 for each team’s second preseason game of the year. The last time the Lions were in Kansas City was week one of the 2023 season – which ended with a 21-20 Lions
Coverage of the Lions opener against the Chiefs starts with Gameday Live at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
