The Detroit Lions had high hopes when they traded up for Jameson Williams. So far, the returns have been mixed. He missed most of last season with an ACL injury (which the team knew about) and then found himself in hot water when he was suspended six games for violating the league’s gambling policy. Williams is drawing criticism again for his 4th of July choices.
Detroit Lions Jameson Williams 4th Of July
A video posted on Instagram showed Williams lighting a large number of fireworks in the early hours of July 5th. While the video does not show anything reckless, some questioned the choices considering how Williams has chosen to make a living. “I get it, Merica and Freedom but I’d leave the explosives to the professionals, especially if you make your money with your hands,” tweeted Jim Costa, a Lions reporter for 97.1 The Ticket. Fans were split down the middle on this one with some defending his actions.
Maybe Not The Best Choice
Fireworks have caused issues for at least one other player in the past. Famously, Jason Pierre-Paul had to have fingers amputated because of a fireworks accident. He was able to keep playing because of his position. If anything were to happen to Williams’ hands, his career would be over. This is where the criticism comes. This seems like an unnecessary risk for a player who still very much needs to prove that he can be an impact receiver in this league. The Lions especially are hoping he can be a receiver of the future as they gave up a lot of draft capital in order to get him.
The Detroit Lions are hoping they will not regret the Jameson Williams trade. The flashes of brilliance have been there and fans are hoping to see that on display after he returns from his six game suspension.
