The Denver Broncos need to ensure the quality of the players they’ll get as Russell Wilson’s cap hit is putting a dent in their ability to attract high-quality players that will strengthen the team.
This is why Sean Payton and the Broncos need to keep players such as Adam Trautman for longer deals. Players like Trautman stood out during a year when there were plenty of things going wrong for them.
Fortunately for Denver, Trautman was also interested in extending his stay at the Mile High City as well.
Denver Broncos extend Adam Trautman to a two-year deal
Andrew Mason of Denver Sports reported that the 27-year-old TE from Dayton agreed to a two-year deal as he enjoyed playing under Payton, who coached him during the start of his career at the New Orleans Saints.
It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that he wanted to come to the Broncos because he loved playing for Sean Payton. After all, he came out to say it when asked about the possibility to returning to the team before they came to an agreement:
“But, no, I’d love to be back here. That’s why I came here. I took the pay cut to come here. To play for Sean (Payton), to play in this offense. To play for Declan (Doyle), our tight ends coach who I was with for three years in New Orleans. So, I would love to be back.”
The team also loved his work and would be eager to work with him until the end of the Broncos’ 2025 campaign:
“He’s a guy that might not have the speed of those guys,” offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said at the time. “But he’s very quarterback-friendly, meaning the quarterback knows exactly where he’s going to be, what he’s going to do.
“And if you’re one of those types of receivers that really talks to the quarterback with your body language and you make the right decisions, then it’s somebody that the quarterback is going to have confidence in.”
How will Adam Trautman thrive with the Denver Broncos?
Trautman has steadily improved as a TE under Payton’s system over the 2023 campaign. He started in 12 of the Broncos’ 17 regular-season games, where he caught the ball for 204 yards and a career-high three touchdowns on 9.3 yards per reception.
Trautman argued that his biggest improvement doesn’t appear on the stat sheet, though. He claimed that working with Payton in the Denver Broncos was critical in his improvement as a player as it helped him process what was happening on the field a lot better.
“People talk about all the time, ‘Oh, the game slows down because I’m just playing.’ That doesn’t happen unless you figure out little tricks and things to speed it up in your mind. It doesn’t just happen from just playing. So, I’d say that part I’ve improved in, as well.”
If Adam Trautman continues his impressive development, it’s only a matter of time before he actually breaks out into an indispensable weapon for Payton’s Broncos.
