Everyone and their mother can see that the Denver Broncos badly need a quarterback as Sean Payton’s relationship with Russell Wilson has all but guaranteed the latter’s departure from the team.
The question that now fills the heads of many members of Broncos Country is which player will likely take over Wilson’s mantle under center. While the team hasn’t given any indication on which direction they are headed, it’s clear that they’re in the market for a capable QB.
One direction they could head in is the NFL Draft, and one mock draft has the team picking up a QB in an interesting position.
Mock draft predicts Denver Broncos to select Spencer Rattler in later rounds
According to Broncos Wire’s Jon Heath, Curt Popejoy of Draft Wire predicts the Broncos to take a swing at South Carolina QB Spencer Rattler in the third round.
While it may seem strange, the logic behind the selection shows that the late selection is one made by necessity rather than not finding other prospects as viable:
Popejoy’s mock has the Broncos selecting Alabama pass rusher Dallas Turner with their first-round pick. Denver then has to wait until the third round to go back on the clock (the team’s second-round pick was traded to the New Orleans Saints as part of the Sean Payton deal last year).
In the third round, the Broncos select South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler. Four other QBs are picked between the Turner (No. 12) and Rattler (No. 76) selections: Michael Penix (No. 39), Bo Nix (No. 42), J.J. McCarthy (No. 43) and Michael Pratt (No. 74).
Rattler, who first came into prominence as one of the stars of QB1: Beyond the Lights Season 3, had a solid year with the Gamecocks to finish his collegiate career. He has 3186 passing yards, 19 TDs, 8 INTs, and a 147.7 passer rating in 12 starts.
If Payton does select him as the best QB remaining in the draft, he’ll have to understand that he’ll be coming in as a project QB and will not have the best of starts to his career. However, great things are in store for him if he manages to mesh well with his teammates and coach.
